Paris - Day 6

Another nice sleep in again this morning and quiche for breakfast in the apartment. Our first stop for the day was at the unofficial Princess Diana's memorial. We didn't actually go looking for it but had been told about it on the boat cruise and found it while walking to our true first stop of the day.

This is at the top of the ramp going into the bridge where Diana died.

We crossed over the Seine River to the Musee des Egouts de Paris. The Paris sewers, whose design is the only one of its kind in the world attracts many visitors each year. It is located in a complex of structures that have 500m's of galleries and you get a glimpse of 2400km's of waste water network. I must say that it was a smelly but interesting museum :)

A look down one of the tunnels. Overhead in that large pipe is a running sewer.

Luckily we only saw a display of rats and mice...didn't see any live ones :)

After the sewer tour we decided rather than going to the caves, we would stay above ground and enjoy the beautiful weather. Our next stop was the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, often abbreviated as POPB or Bercy which is an indoor sports arena that is currently home to the Euroleague Basketball Final Four. We went to check if there were tickets for tonights final game but sadly they were all sold out. The scalpers were quite expensive but you never know, we might change our minds and head there tonight :)

Bercy Stadium - very cool building that is surrounded by grass and windows.

On our way to the stadium, from the Metro we noticed an open air market so we jumped back on and went to check it out. Wow, it was the biggest market I have ever been to, it spanned many many blocks and had fruits, meats, cheeses, ethnic food, clothing...you name it. We got there as people were starting to think about packing up and the bartering was fun to watch. The market itself reminded me of the St Albert Market in Edmonton just times that by about 10 :)

A picture of just one section of the open air market.

A beautiful building that was at the end of the market.

It was an interesting day, it reminded me very much of my childhood where on Sunday's shops/stores were not open. There were things like markets (Pickering flee market back then was such fun) and restaurants only that were open. After our market shopping, we thought it was time for a nice cappuccino and to soak up some vitamin D :) We also both spoke to our mom's which was really nice...happy Mother's Day! to all the mom's out there :))

Rick relaxing with his cappuccino.

We took a different direction to find our way back to the apartment and came across a bunch of new shops and things to check out - our plan for tomorrow. I can't believe tomorrow will be our last day in this wonderful city...the time went so fast.

We came across a fire station on our walk but no one was around to check out their uniforms up close :)

The new street we found with lots of shops...fun.

Till tomorrow. I have been taking lots of pictures of the beautiful doors each day, I might have to do a day's blog on door pictures.
